Ideal Master Mold Shapes for Molding

Not all master molds are suitable for molding. Choosing the right shape of master mold will easily solve demolding issues.
Suitable Shapes:
Designs suitable for silicone mold replication typically need to be rigid and have simple geometric forms. Please avoid deep or complex undercuts, as they can be easily demolded from the flexible mold.
Ideal master mold materials include resin pieces, smooth plastics, ceramic, glass, and metal objects (even those with fine surface details).
- Rigid Shapes (Recommended)
The master mold should be made of a hard material (e.g., plastic, metal, or hardwood) to prevent deformation when pouring silicone rubber.
Objects of unsuitable master molds: candles, thin plaster castings. They are easily damaged during demolding.

- Flat Surface without Hollow Areas
Designs with at least one flat surface are the easiest to use for making simple one-piece molds.
Avoid shapes with excessive undulation (e.g., an angel with large wings) or those with multiple hollow/open areas (e.g., a hollow pen holder). Silicone will flow into the open spaces and bond together, making demolding failure.

Tips for Successful Mold Making
- Use a release agent: Be sure to apply a release agent to prevent the master mold from sticking, especially for complex or porous objects.
- Mold design: For a simple flat master mold, a one-piece mold can be made; for complex designs, a two-piece mold with a locking mechanism is recommended.
