What to do if Powder Won’t Stick to Your Mold

Have you ever had trouble brushing pigment powder or flakes onto a mold and only finding the color uneven or barely visible after demolding? Don’t worry, here are some common reasons why this happens and how you can fix it.
Why Powder Doesn’t Stick Well to Molds
Uneven or weak adhesion usually isn’t caused by just one issue. It often comes down to three main factors:
- The mold’s inner surface may be rough or aged
- The brush used may be too stiff
- The powder itself may not be fine enough
How to Fix Powder Application Issues
1. Mold surface problems
A smooth mold surface makes it easier for powder to adhere. If the inner wall of your mold has become rough or aged, it’s best to replace it. Always make sure the mold is completely dry before use, moisture can prevent the powder from sticking.
2. Brush hardness
Using a brush that’s too hard can actually scrape powder off instead of applying it. Opt for a soft-bristled tool, such as a sponge-tip eyeshadow applicator, for smooth and even coverage.

3. Powder quality
If the powder particles are too large, they may clump together or sink instead of coating the mold evenly. For best results, use ultra-fine powders like chameleon mica powder, chrome powder, or mica powder. These give a smooth, vibrant finish.
