Why Is Epoxy Resin Sticky?

Epoxy resin not curing properly is every resin artist’s worst nightmare. That sticky surface can feel like the end of your project, but don’t panic just yet! The good news is, this problem is often fixable and preventable. In today’s article, we’ll break down why resin gets sticky, what causes curing issues, and how you can rescue your piece if things go wrong.

Why does resin become sticky?
That dreaded tacky or sticky surface is almost always a sign that the resin hasn’t cured completely, which is mainly affected by incomplete curing reaction (chemical principle),unsuitable temperature and humidity (environmental conditions),and operating techniques.
What Can Go Wrong?
Incorrect Mixing Ratio
One of the most common culprits is not following the mixing instructions to the letter. Whether you're using a volume or weight ratio, even a small mistake, especially adding too much hardener (part B)—can throw off the entire curing process. Always double-check your product's specific ratio!
Not Mixing Thoroughly
Resin needs to be mixed well, really well. Aim for 3–5 minutes of continuous stirring until the mixture turns clear with no cloudy swirls or streaks. A common mistake, especially for beginners, is forgetting to scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing cup. This leaves unmixed portions that won’t cure properly and leads to stickiness.
Temperature and Humidity Problems
Resin likes a very specific environment to cure correctly. Ideally, keep your workspace at around 73–78°F (23–26°C) with a humidity level between 50%–60%. If it’s too hot, too cold, or too humid, curing can slow down—or stop altogether.
Too Much Color or Filler
We all love adding pigments, glitter, and other fun stuff to our resin, but too much of a good thing can mess with the curing process. Overloading the mix can prevent proper bonding, especially in thicker pours.
How to Fix Sticky Resin?
If only the surface of your resin is sticky or tacky, don’t worry, you can absolutely save your piece! Here's how:
Scrape off the sticky layer
Use something like a popsicle stick or old credit card to gently remove the uncured surface layer.
Clean the area
Wipe it down with a bit of isopropyl alcohol on a cloth or paper towel to make sure you’re working with a clean surface.
Recoat with a fresh, properly mixed batch
Make sure this new layer follows the correct ratio and is mixed thoroughly. Pour it on top and allow it to cure under ideal conditions.
Final Thoughts
Sticky resin doesn’t mean your project is ruined. With a little know-how and care, you can prevent sticky situations before they start and fix them if they happen. Happy crafting! 💖
